Doonesbury, War and Sunk Costs
Panels rearranged from original source for better fit

One axiom of decision theory is that sunk costs are always irrelevant when making a decision, since they cannot be recovered. Technically then, both "Mr. President" (who is determined to justify the fallen) and those who oppose him on grounds of the many who have fell, are somewhat off the mark.

A sad world it is, when what is theoretically irrelevant suddenly seems to be the entire point all along.

Hah! nice one, I enjoy Doonesbury very much. Wish NLB would make more purchases of their compilations.

Dun think the axiom works for a compulsive gambler tho heh

Well it should, because on every throw the odds are still the same, irrespective of what has gone before. No matter how many heads you have tossed in a row, the odds on the next coin remains 50:50...

Doonesbury usually cuts quite close.

Yep, that they continue to gamble is often used as illustration that many of us practice irrational decision making. The Viet war was another, but I hope this war won't get the chance.

The best comics are those that are humourous, and yet have bite. Doonesbury is one of those. Non Sequitur as well (most of the times anyway).
