Theory of Maximal Tinkering Utility
Got my laptop back today. Whoo hoo. Now the cursor doesn't fly to the NE direction on pressing the spacebar.
Problem is, I've gotten bored with the stuff that pretty much enraptured me during the exam period. Games that I *just* have to complete then now seem dull and silly (my gf would say duller and sillier). Even updating the blog (which I estimate draw, oh, 1 reader in 10000 years) falls wayyyyy low on my to do list. Therefore, there is a inverse relationship between how fun something is, and how much time you should not spend on it. The Bible sure got this forbidden fruit thingy down pat. Good thing Eve was made of stronger stuff than me. I'd probably have gotten both our arses kicked to Never Never Land.
Must get to work soon. Revamp the website, pick up the flash projects I left hanging.
GF landed a job in Bloomberg. The salary is pretty awe-inspiring. She can be the anti-SMU poster girl. Take that, smart asses.

Freedom Day 2
Sent laptop for repairs, together with lots of other disgruntled students. Toshiba is truly the laptop brand from hell. That or NUS students get quality inspection rejects. Thought I could survive 5 days without Internet. Boy was I wrong. Hooked up my older and much slower PC to the ADSL modem. I feel vaguely human again. On the day I finished my finals, the Nicoll highway collapsed. When I saw footage from the TV, the first thought that came to me was "oh dear, LA earthquake again", even though I knew it was stills from Nicoll highway. Man. I've zoomed on that stretch of road so many times since I got my license. A bit hard to believe it's collapse. Roads in Singapore don't do that. PAP wouldn't allow it. Guess I was wrong.Household chores today. La dee da.My PS controllers are spoilt, so I can't finish those rpgs. My dreamcast is spoilt. My laptop, together with the multitudes of games, is out of action. Sigh.

3 down 2 to go
Whee!!! Closed book computing modules next week. I predict there'll be bloody massacres that will leave me scarred for life. I finally feel like a CS student again...
Usual rant. Hot. Humid. Sticky. Sweaty. Hot. Really really hot.
Play with da chicken ! Try some outrageous commands like "elephant", "duck", "die". Naughty commands work too! Like "strip" and "f---" (heh heh. I've been bad.)

2 down 3 to go
Pfffft. Stupid cash flows. Knew it'd be my waterloo. Was like being on the Titanic - I know something is wrong but could do nothing to correct it. Hopefully my results won't have the same fate as that ship.
English tomorrow. Haven't really paid it much attention.
Feel perpetually sticky these few days. Bathe, sweat, bathe, sweat. It's getting so I have to hide in my a/c room at night. In the afternoon, just walking out of the house is like walking straight into a sucker punch.
Internship for the holidays was confirmed so I'm all set. Pretty relieved not having to scour the agencies for work opportunities. A bit on the short side (6 wks), but heck. It's database related (fun!) and I get the whole of July to myself. Going to read up on J2EE.

春泥 (Harlem Yu)
Lovely tune, lovely lyrics. A bit sad, but all the more meaningful...Use the Unicode encoding to view. I wrote it while listening to the song, so there may be the occasional wrong word.

Bloody Sacred
Yesterday, my download for the game Sacred completed and I installed it. What a letdown. Its a Diablo-ripoff that doesn't even do the job properly. The character modeling is painfully kiddy and the animation is jerky on my P4 machine. Getting the game to run properly is challenging enough. Lots of If-Else logic involved. The worst thing of course, is the game itself. My elf couldn't shoot a single arrow. My seraphim couldn't swing her sword. The enemy characters simply stand there and a) kill each other b) ignore me. How fucking stupid is the AI anyway? Now, I'm a computing student and am reasonably bright. If I can't get the game to run properly (dormant enemies for godsakes!), then the game is screwed up, plain and simple.
So I uninstall it, only to find that the damnably stupid uninstallation program wiped out my mp3 codec along with the game (Sacred uses mp3 for its ambience. How amateurish.). As a result, Window Media Player couldn't play a single mp3. I had to reinstall the codecs, after realizing that re-installation of Media Player didn't help one bit. All these for a lousy game. I'm never going to play anything from Ascaron again. Ever.
The gods of copyrights previously mentioned must be having a ball. Bleah.

1 down 4 to go
Forgot about the little caveat to be early for exams. As a result, arrived only 10 minutes before my 9am paper. Was not late, but it was a little close for comfort. Will take the earlier train to Pasir Ris in future.
Paper was okay. Thought I didn't do too badly. They posted the solutions immediately and invited us to check our answers. Not going to happen. I shall remain blissfully ignorant until all my exams end. Just call me delusional.
Up next, financial accounting and english.

I've gone and done it...
D-Day's tomorrow, and I shifted my blog to LiveJournal. Sweet. Never knew I could be so blaise about exams... Anyway, I blame this all on SoC. Why on earth does it only provide static web hosting? no CGI, no JSP, no PHP... On top of that, database accounts has to be applied for. Somehow, I don't think they'd accept an application for the next two years, based merely on the justification "Because I want it". Nuts. Anyway, ferreted out this fantastic, and free, mySQL webserver. I couldn't believe it. Working and everything. And free. A bit slow, but that's understandable considering the number of hops between your web server and database server. And hell, did I mention it's free. Anyway, I could have come up with my own dynamic blog, with comments and everything. But the performance will suffer. Plus only hosts within the NUS domain will be able to leave comments. That sucks. Wait till I inherit that fortune from Nigeria. I'll get my own servers. I'll have you know I'm a multi-billionaire! I've got lots of friends in Nigeria who are going to hand me big bucks!

Anyway, until those bucks come, I've got 5 papers to handle. Performance this semester has been above average so far. Past experience tells me I'll nuke everything in the finals. Heh. Here goes nothing.

Procrastination
CS2102 - 2% (I borrowed the text. That counts too. Bite me.)CS2105 - 80% CS3250 - 75%EL1101E - 0%BH1002 - 20%
Shocking. Absolutely shocking. I'm studying so slowly that my books will be mouldy by the time I'm finished.
Wisdom of the Finals - Having the laptop on during revision is not a good idea. Especially if you have games on it, like me. Especially if you have broadband, like me. Especially if you know of this site, like me. Especially if you find lots of tempting games and movies, like me. Especially if you start downloading them, like me. And playing or watching them when the download completes, like me. Even worse if you stare at the download GUI, using heretofore undiscovered pyschic energy to increase the d/l rate, like... guess who?
One of my d/ls inexplicably stopped at 62% and refused to start again. The gods of copyrights must be laughing at me. A hex on you!!!

Give me Liberty!!!
The project for CS3250 is *finally* completed and binary-submitted on IVLE! There was a frenzy of activity yesterday due to some secret bug of Microsoft Excel crashing the entire project. Kudos to Andy, whose idea/ suggestion/ guess (don't know which) hit it right on the spot. Let this be a lesson: Never, ever, *never* install those darn Add-Ins.
After slogging through that particular project, just being able to revise and study ought to be a novelty and breeze. Thank goodness I have 2 non-CS modules to act as buffer. Hopefully, I can finish the first round of revisions by Friday...

End is Near
Finally, the last project is about to wrap up. Feel so liberated. For those who don't get my clever wit, "end" also refers to the finals, which are drawing closer upon this still very confused and dazed soul. Slotted ALOHA? Are we in Hawaii (I wish)??
Side Note 1: Shame on Washington. To preserve the "status quo" they actually congratulated Chen? Man...
